The history of American traditional sailor tattoos is rooted in the traditions and symbols of the British Royal Navy, Polynesian body art, and the experiences of American sailors. British sailors encountered Polynesian body art during their travels, and brought the tradition back to Europe and America.
The word "tattoo" comes from the Polynesian word tatau, which imitates the sound of the traditional tattoo instruments used to pierce the skin.
American sailors have been getting tattoos since colonial times. The American Traditional style, also known as "Old School", was influenced by sailors who returned from the Pacific in the late 19th century with intricate designs and techniques.
In the 1930s, Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins refined these designs, bringing bold lines, vibrant colors, and American symbolism to the style. He is often credited as the father of the American Traditional style.
